Justin Greaves played the starring role with a five-wicket haul as West Indies dismissed Pakistan for 282 on the third day of the first Test at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Monday, taking a 29-run lead into the first innings.
The visitors, who resumed their first innings after lunch from 267/8 in response to the West Indies’ 311 all out, were able to add 15 more to their total and were thus booked for 282 in 80.1 overs.
Pakistan got off to an unwanted start to the second session of the ongoing third day as Greaves got rid of Mohammad Abbas (nil) to register his first five-wicket haul in the format.
Khurram Shahzad offered some resistance to the order with a gritty 19 off 36 deliveries until he fell victim to Kemar Roach.
Greaves led the West Indies bowling side with sensational bowling figures of 5/27 in his 11 overs, followed by Roach and Shamar Joseph with two each, while Jayden Seales chipped in with one scalp.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan made a formidable start to the day as they resumed their first innings of 199/3, with their overnight pair of Shan Masood and Salman Ali Agha frustrating the home side’s bowlers.
The duo put together a crucial 47-run partnership for the fourth wicket, with Masood bringing up his seventh Test century and first since being replaced as Pakistan Test captain by star batsman Babar Azam.
Shamar Joseph finally gave West Indies the much-needed breakthrough in the 15th over of the day when he fooled Agha with a late-swinger that clipped the top of his stump. The all-rounder made a cautious twenty off sixty deliveries and hit three boundaries.
Greaves dealt Pakistan’s response a huge blow in the next over when he bowled centurion Masood, who walked back after top-scoring 109 off 184 deliveries, studded with 12 fours.
The 32-year-old fast-bowling all-rounder struck once apiece in his next three overs, dismissing the returning Aamir Jamal (three), debutant Ali Usman (nil) and Rizwan (12) to reduce Pakistan to 259/8.
